Purse Theft - It Can Happen to You

By Alex Kamas

Your Purse was stolen and now you have Identify Theft and Credit Card Theft, as well as your cash! You wonder, "What could I possibly have done to prevent this?" Simple. It could not have happened if you did not carry a purse. Try a fanny pack; they are coming back in style! Be sure to keep it in front of you at all times, to avoid someone picking your pack. If you do carry a purse, be sure to drape it across your torso, not just dangling on one shoulder. This will keep someone from snatching it, but will not prevent someone from cutting the strap. There are purses with a steel wire in the handles that cannot be cut with a knife. Another possibility is to carry the purse over your shoulder and under your coat. Always keep your purse in front of your body. Men who carry their valuables in their pockets should only use their front pockets for that purpose.

Lets see a good example of Poor Purse Security. Have you ever seen a grocery cart with a purse in it , and the owner busy trying to find that elusive can of beans? A stolen purse would make those very expensive beans! How about the lady or gentleman who run into the fast food place for a quick cup of coffee, leaving their purse, briefcase, or laptop in an unlocked running car. That would be a triple play for a thief. They would get transportation, cash and credit cards, and probably an address and keys to a house. It would cause many hours of stress for the victim. All in all, a very expensive cup of coffee! Also be wary as you leave the store with a cart full of groceries. This is a particular vulnerable place for purse snatching.

If you do chose to carry a purse, make some adjustments in the contents. The old saying, "Don't put all your eggs in one basket" applies here. To start, don't carry large amounts of cash. Don't put your credit or debit cards in your purse. They would be safer, and just as handy, in a buttoned front pocket. Put your drivers license in that same front pocket as well, and you are good to go with no wallet required. Car and house keys should be in a pocket, as well. This leaves personal necessities, such as Kleenex, aspirin and lipstick, in the purse. These items could not be too costly or too much trouble to replace.

Some information from the Seattle Police Department's web site concerning purse and wallet that is worth repeating. Be aware of your surroundings and know who is nearby. Pay attention to the uncomfortable feelings that often warn us of potential danger. Make a plan for how you would respond if someone tries to steal your purse or wallet. Don't resist, or try to fool the robber. Be especially cautious in busy stores, shopping districts, at pubic events, on Buses and at bus stops. Pickpockets often work in teams, one creating a distraction by bumping or shoving, or perhaps asking a question, while the other one lifts a wallet from a back pocket or a handbag. There are many purse thefts each day. Don't let one be yours.

Be Alert and Aware Always

Alex Kamas is owner of Simple Safety Solutions providers of Non-Lethal Safety Items.
